Downwind Camps
Perfect Conditions
Puerto Rico is perfectly situated for downwind paddling. Picture surfing on the open ocean in warm Caribbean waters. The consistency of the 12 - 20 knot trade winds allow for reliable downwind runs every day. The focus of our camps is on OC1 paddling and serves as an introduction to open ocean, downwind conditions.
We focus on:
1) Stroke technique with a video analysis.
2) Learning technique drills relevant to your stroke.
3) Spending time on the water practicing.
You will learn balance and stability techniques, as well as when and how to apply them. This camp will teach you how to surf and read the water. Finish the week with some fun paddling, all while reviewing and practicing the things you learned. Leave with a better understanding of what proper paddling should feel and look like, and why it's so fun.
We emphasize:
1) Why we paddle.
2) Where outrigger paddling came from and who paddles outrigger.
3) How to handle OC-1 canoes on land an in the ocean.
4) How to assess weather conditions and ocean safety, as well as tips to avoid trouble on and off the water.

Depending on the skill level of paddlers, camps will cater to those who want to step up their competitive game. For paddlers who prove they are already competent in big downwind conditions, we’ll fast forward through the basics and hit the water earlier and harder. We will have multiple coaches, on water safety staff and escort boats to allow for multiple skill levels. We will still do the video analysis as you will always learn from analyzing yourself. We will also maintain a focus on ocean safety every step of the way. We will hit the blue water and challenging conditions, practicing and refining open ocean surfing and reading the ocean. We may choose to paddle in various locations based on the weather conditions, needs and desires of the paddlers.
